About us
Who we are
Debre Menkirat Kidus Georgis — Saint George Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church — is a community of faith in the heart of Seattle, rooted in one of the oldest living Christian traditions in the world. We are part of the Oriental Orthodox family of churches, carrying forward the apostolic faith, the ancient liturgy, and the sacred hymnody (Mezmur) of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church.
Every Sunday, our sanctuary fills with prayer, scripture, and hymns chanted in Ge'ez, the sacred language of our liturgy, passed down through generations. Worship here is not something to watch from the outside — it is something to enter. Incense, icons, chant, and quiet reflection all draw us closer to God and to one another.
More than anything, we are a family. Visitors often say this church feels like home from the very first Sunday — a place of warmth, peace, and belonging, where longtime parishioners and first-time guests are welcomed the same way. Whether you come to pray, to hear the Gospel preached, to raise your voice in Mezmur, or simply to sit in stillness with God among people who care for one another, there is a place for you here.
We welcome everyone who wishes to grow in faith — Eritrean and Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Christians, and anyone seeking a community centered on Christ. Come as you are. You will not leave as a stranger.
